Why are dental sealants used?

How are dental sealants placed?
The back teeth are first thoroughly cleaned and dried by our dentist or hygienist. An acidic solution is then placed on the chewing surface of the molars and premolars to roughen them so the dental sealant can bond properly. The teeth are dried again and then the dental sealant is painted on by our dentist. The material is allowed to cure in place.
