Are you taking care of your dentures properly? Dentures can be created from synthetic materials like plastic, porcelain or a combination of the two. Regardless of what they are composed of, how well you care for your dentures could be vital to their longevity.
Designed to look like natural teeth, dentures may require similar yet different care. Like natural teeth, they will need to be brushed daily. However, toothbrushes with hard bristles can scratch and damage dentures. You could use a denture brush to clean them, but often a soft-bristled brush can also do the job. Before brushing, you can rinse off loose food particles from your teeth. Many toothpastes can be too abrasive to be used on dentures.
When you are cleaning them, our dentist recommend that you stand over a folded towel or a sink of water in case your dentures fall. Because your dentures are made from such delicate materials, an accidental fall could cause them to fracture, chip or break.
If you are not using your dentures they need to be kept moist. You can keep them in a glass of water, or Drs. Sefcik, Andrews or Andrews may be able to recommend an appropriate soaking solution for you to use. If the dentures dry out, they can lose their shape.
